You see this sort of thing with regard to ancient Greek and Roman society, as well. I keep encountering comments and mentions of them being extremely gay and effeminate, taking boy lovers, and all sorts of very modern Left Wing things the goal of which seems to be to contaminate a reference to an extremely strong and masculine culture. It's revolting.
I don't see how comparing themself to living in the era of Nero, with the people who went to war with the ocean and appointed a pony to head government official, is in any way a positive "win" for their side.
