Certain cults throughout history have always treated apostates as if they were literally dead. The Jehovah's Witnesses are probably the best known ones in modern days that do this. If you come back into the fold, there's generally a ceremony that basically brings you "back from the dead" (a la Lazarus.)

Still Harry Potter, but you have to tear out all mentions of J.K. Rowling's name from it.
Hogwarts Legacy tried that. They even included a troon to repent for Rowling's heresy, and it's still a no go for them.
The left's purity circle quite consciously does not include a way to bring yourself completely back into grace.
