One of the towns I grew up in had the first murder of the Year announced on the news. It wasn't first baby, or some cool new sign, it was a murder. That usually happens the day of New Year's. One time there was two weeks when a murder didn't happen and people got worried.
I can agree to that. YouTube does the same with videos. Most of the actually popular videos are about videogames, but they can't admit to that.
There are some wonderful books about how crime is going down. Mass shootings are big because they are rare. Heck, so is war. One of the reasons why WWI was so terrible was that most wars were short and rare in Europe so no one expected it to erupt so badly.
And the Brits were told they'd be done by/home for Christmas, so neither was expecting more than a few months, although comparatively it does seem some expected it to be shorter than others.
