Which lead to massive coverage and talk about it, basically meme'ing it into existence until more (young) adults started eating them as a joke.
Kinda like how Nintendo puts bitterants on Switch cartridges to dissuade toddlers from eating them, but most people only found out about it because game journos were the ones putting game carts in their mouths and writing articles about it.
