The villains, (SEELE) a secret organization who secretly control world governments, want to fuse all humans in to one to bring back their satanic god.
Now look at whats happening. They want to fuse men and women with transgenderism and nonbinary shit, they want to fuse countries and remove borders and create a one world government and they want to fuse races with race mixing.
The endings of Evangelion are linked with Hideaki Anno's emotions and situation at the time of making it as the series itself HEAVILY focuses on the character's emotions more than giant robots, secret organisations and biblical references.
The original series ending was constrained by time and resources so it to many people felt rushed and there was backlash because of it.
That backlash caused the End of Evangelion when Anno was in a dark place and extremely frustrated at a fanbase that would send death threats to his studio and himself.
After this venting and being in a dark place, he met and married in 2002 manga artist Moyoco Anno which 5 years later starts the release of the Rebuild films. The character added Mari is basically Anno's wife who helps Shinji as an outsider overcome his internal struggles like none of the other characters could.
The REAL plot of Evangelion is depression and understanding how to manage it and Anno's message was escapism alone cannot help you so you need contact with the outside world. The Rebuild titles themselves actually provide the message for this in order: You are not alone, you can not advance, you can not redo and then the 4th (though not called 4 because in Asia 4 sounds like death so not a good thing to end on when the theme is depression) is the answer: you can not redo to undo your mistakes but you are not alone so find someone who can help you.
Sorry for the long response but thought context was important.
I guess I should watch the Rebuild movies, but tbh I was very satisfied with End of Evangelion and how it communicated that message. It was a venting of the shit he got, but in the end accepting reality for what it is and moving on.
I’m also an Asuka-fag so I liked how the ending had Asuka starting to open her heart to Shinji.
People say EoE was Anno's backlash to the fans. If that's true, then the Rebuilds are Anno's expression of pure hatred to the fans. Unfortunately, that also makes them artistically inferior products.
I'm aware a lot of people are into the Rebuilds, but I can't stand metacommentary BS, let alone whole movies of it.
I would say you should watch the Rebuild films ESPECIALLY because you're an Asuka-fag because I personally feel like they give her more character development in the films (as with every character).
Don't be disappointed with who Shinji ends up with, I know that was actually the biggest discontent with the community at the end than the actual ending, everyone kind of felt content once this song played and learnt what the lyrics meant.
