Miserable to live in, okay to visit. Winter time is usually best because you avoid the insane heat/humidity and bugs, plus the possibilities of hurricanes. Avoid Mardi Gras because its designed to trap and prey on tourists.
Get a good ol' boy to take you on a Swamp Tour, eat at some local restaurants until you are sick of seafood, then go home. Most other stuff won't appeal to you without having a childhood to get into it.
I went to NO in may and holy fuck the humidity. However alligator poboys, gumbo, and swamp gas slushes made it worthwhile.
You've got the same opinion as someone who grew up there then. Because the only reason I ever go back is family and food, and the whole time I complain about the heat. And I was raised in it.
My best friend from the military lives in mobile so I always go down there every other year or so. He’ll just sit around shirtless and drink beer in the heat while I’m there feeling like I’m on deployment again. The creole food is definitely worth the trip though.

Sounds like the way I view the Pacific Northwest. I greatly prefer Midwestern, mountain and Appalachian states but all my family is over here. Some friends still left over here too. Makes it hard to up and leave, especially in today's housing, and job market. Oh, and gas prices. Can't forget those.
