It's bad here, at least we aren't getting arrested for tweets (yet?)
Where the hell is the black Santa push coming from this year? I think I've seen black Santas before, but they are equal to or more common than normal Santas on the shelves at all the stores, including Hobby Lobby. There's apparently two Netflix movies with them this year. It's like they all got together and decided that this was the "latest thing" they were choosing to push this year.
It takes 2-3 years for ideas to be thought of and released. This came out right after the summer of love.
That's plausible. What I don't get is the universality of it.
Target? Sure, they love homos, so blasting black Santa over all the shelves is in character for them. Netflix? They're known for it. But Walmart and Hobby Lobby? I wouldn't think that every store would go this way.
Are you surprised? Ebenezer is a symbol of learning and doing better through experience. Santa Clause is a kid’s icon meant to sell toys. One is historic cultural and the other is for children. Changing him black is the same as telling all black people “You’re just children.”
The bastardization of Christmas, shame these fiends are no longer dealt with as heretics.
They may not have a choice around Scrooge.
Black? Trauma over housing.
Asian? Racist stereotype (wealth).
Indian/Ingenious? Can't ever be bad.
Hispanic? Do they even exist in Canada?
Slightly more seriously, the character might be unrecognizable soon enough (too religious of a story to keep in modern consciousness), so they might need to stay closer to the true depiction.
