The only breakthrough in mathematics that could "threaten humanity" would be proving P vs NP for P=NP. That would end the digital economy overnight, as it would render all cryptography broken. But that is hardly enough to end humanity.
That could be adapted to in short order, a few weeks at most. It only effects RSA derived encryptions. You could still just switch over to elliptic curve or lattice public key schemes to replace it.
All you have to do is build a quantum computer for that. Which people are already doing, so it seems like that happens first. You never know when mathematical advancements come along, but people have been working on this for a long time.
This is a good neutral overview to read in conjunction. Looks like Altman is basically trying to take over the company (which isn't a normal company) and go counter to its mission, and the board fired him for it.
They're most likely lying about the breakthrough and if they somehow are telling the truth about something, they've made it clear there are enough anti-progress activists in charge of all AI research to keep us from ever having access to it.

Excellent article, thanks for posting it. It might warrant its own post.
Havin a structure like that doesn't make it look like you're on the up and up.

Perhaps that was his gambit the entire time. He got rid of the people who would slow his path.
