Dunno, the hatred for Germans and Russians runs pretty deep there. I could totally see them doing it out of spite, and with the new pipeline they stood to gain financially selling excess to Germany at inflated prices.
Here's why I doubt it was done without US approval. Russia had just gone to war with Ukraine and around this time was when everyone was trying to push the Putin is the next Hitler, he's going to attack Poland next and then take over the world narrative. If Poland does this attack without anyone's approval and they get caught red handed, does that put their NATO membership in jeopardy? I feel like they wouldn't want to cause too many problems with their allies with Russia so close to them.
I feel you could be right it's the Poles who did it but I wouldn't be shocked if the USA asked them to and they were like hell yeah of course!
Poland has been itching for a war with Russia for sometime.
It's insane to me, as this whole mess started with Obama's appeasement "reset" plan that was soft on Russia, nixing a NATO missile defense deal.
Poland realized it was a mistake and upped military stance anyway, effectively snubbing the will of Obama anyway.
I guess I'm saying they didn't care about risking escalation before, and they certainly don't now either.
I would remind you that Poland is one of the very few NATO countries to consistently meet their 2% gdp spending commitment. They've been preparing for quite some time and are exceptionally proficient.
