It is amazing how much they screwed the pooch with recruitment. The military pretty much relies on three pillars:
Legacy military - everyone since your great grandfather was in, and you go in. Literally, no recruitment initiative is needed by the military. You got them.
People coming from poor/working class families that want to learn a trade so they can improve their lot in life. Just show ads about all the jobs you can get post military by learning a skill.
Bored middle class / upper middle class kids who want to do something exciting and blow shit up. Show a bunch of ads with dudes jumping out of planes or racing tanks through the desert.
It is not hard. No one wants to see an ad about someone going "I wanted to see myself there to make a statement..."
I, too, am part of that first group. My family has been here since the first European settlements, and has fought under the American flag since the Revolution. None of my generation joined: no one went to Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Ukraine. We know that our country no longer loves us, and we return the favor.
