Whose national interest? What's the nation?
Liberalism also has to pretend not to be authoritarian. If it goes full mask off, it loses it's only selling point (liberty) which it uses to justify any and all drawbacks.
The nation is supposed to represent an ethnic state composed of people of kin relations that share a culture. Basically a size step up from tribe.
Not some corporate entity that naturalizes anybody who shits a baby out in a geographic region.
