The problem is some people cannot separate "I personally find it reprehensible and will judge you on it" from "It should be illegal, banished and the full weight thrown at you for it."
Personally, I find it quite effective to simply quote actual laws at them and the history of them, which usually gets them caught in a loop of screaming "YOU ARE A PEDO FOR EVEN QUESTIONING IT! The government would NEVER abuse a law if you let them pass it!!"
People on here actively refuse to separate the two. I have flat out said I don't want it banned just acknowledged that it's pedo shit and all I'll hear back is "you're trying to censor" "so you want it banned"
