They had a nice, comfy gig going, consistent second place to the DNC and never getting in the way of their agenda, and Trump had to turn up and fucking ruin all of it by actually attempting to act for the vast masses most of the RNC seems to despise just as much - if not as openly - as the DNC does.
I've said this before, but it was a horrible move by DeSantis to run this election. He had a great thing going as governor, and he was a rising star for the Republicans. But he knew that Trump would run again, and he chose to enter a mudfight with him, alienating a huge portion of the Right who approved of the President's policies, before the Wu Flu was released. He should have just supported Trump again this time, defended him against attacks, and then run for President 4 years later, with the full support of Trump's entire former base. There would have been no infighting. He's not like Biden, who's becoming increasingly senile every single day. DeSantis is still young, and had plenty of time.
It was just a bad move, and now everyone has seen how little charisma he has on the debate stage, when faced with someone like Vivek. DeSantis' presidential aspirations are now basically dead in the water, perhaps for over a decade or forever.

He could've got a win out of his run anyway by running like Vivek or Larry Elder and supporting Trump while bringing a couple of neglected issues to light and building his brand. Instead, he and his wife thought he could actually take the primary from Trump... one of the biggest miscalculations in politics.
I actually like Trump as a person, and he cultivates that connection with his base. I don't dislike DeSantis, but I don't know him.
