I miss the days of private servers and people generally not giving a fuck.
It's all so pointless (yes, I know they have their nefarious reasons) too! There's a fucking mute button. Someone being a jackass to you, and you don't feel like dealing with it? There's an easy solution. Devs should only be going after things like cheaters, griefers , repeat teamkillers (if applicable in that game), etc. People that are intentionally ruining the game experience for others, and for which there isn't a one-button solution.
The problem is you really do have a contingent of people out there ( Mostly left wingers of some variety or other ) who do believe it's a businesses' responsibility to manage their experience like this and I managed to piss them off by pointing out what was going to happen and gave up on interacting with them at all as a result. However I do believe that all the online harassment propaganda being shoved in our faces over this is just a smokescreen for the larger glowie op going on in the background where they're trying to harvest data on gamers in a desperate search for white supremacists and incels.
When they don't find the evidence they want and end up being extremely disappointed they're just dealing with a bunch of autists sperging out at each other at 3:00am for stress relief they'll probably end up manufacturing some and it will finally hit the news to try and frighten the normies. Then it's going to be my tedious task to educate the morons I know RL who will inevitably fall for it and explain I'd been watching them plan this years ago.
Sometimes it's also a response by companies to try to adhere to regionally selective laws that try to shove hate speech laws down every company's throat and assume culpability. Usually the EU as a whole or specific EU countries.

They're definitely doing that on internal government systems, so it would stand to reason that if they can get their tendrils into other systems they'd do the same there as well.
What a bunch of faggots.
