Briefly listening to the CODEC calls from both games, the PS1 calls sound like what you'd hear from a radio, and the TS calls...don't.
The PS1 CODEC calls sound comparable to what I get from my modern cell phone, which is pretty good considering the game was supposed to have taken place in the early 00s.
