Considering crocodilians are one of the only reptiles to show significant maternal instincts, we can probably make a good guess that its on the more positive side.
Also probably won't be enough to override the other primal instincts.
There was an incident in northern BC about twenty years ago. Some couple was camping with their baby, when a bear comes along. What seems to have happened is that the parents freaked out ... the bear killed them, and left the baby alone (they found the father's head a bit of a distance away, iirc.) The scene was found some time after it happened, and I got it from a friend of someone who had to go clean it up.
They figured it was a sow, and she was trying to protect the baby from the screaming apes without realizing they were its parents.
