They're currently trying to push the current thing 'black female role' hard because from an 'intersectional perspective', black women have been 'historically underrepresented in mainstream media'. That's why they've shoved black women in Jurassic Park, Dune, Star Wars, etc.
But the most likely explanation is that he was told to insert a black female character.
