I don't think this is bad. It's good when people change their minds or see the writing on the wall, and go from being bad to being better.
It's fairly well-known that DeSantis used to be a neocon, like many in the GOP. But now he is increasingly critical of neoconnery. While I still have my doubts about him (e.g. to Tucker he said that he would crack down on Iran because it gives weapons to Russia), he is way better than nearly every other GOP politician in the past.
I love DeSantis as my Governor. But I think that this Presidential run is going to hurt him, not the least because he is working with Jeb!, who is viewed as being a great Governor who wrecked himself attempting to become President.
But your last sentence is why I am going into local politics. It's time for people who are savvy and smart to stop leaving governance to the ambitious.
I think it will help him, because four years from now he might just be old news - like Christie was in 2016, when he could have won the nomination in 2012.
Only thing I'm worried about is Trump being a loose cannon.
Yup, his neoconnery (good word) is certainly there, but seems to (for now) be at a lighter level than the full-on neocons. What he'd actually do if he got in power remains to be seen, but he's certainly currently not at the highest levels of neoconnery.
I think he's always been not a top-notch neocon. When he was in Congress, while the worst types like Pompeo favored regime change in both Libya and Syria, DeSantis opposed it in one of the two, I think Syria.
That said, I don't pay much heed to what they say. It's not as if politicians have actual beliefs. They'll say and do whatever gets them into office. The job of the people is to ensure that being awful doesn't get you into office, which is easier said than done.

I prefer Sean when it comes to Connery.
