Considering it's "100 years later", the list of ways it can tie in is very limited. The only notable events are the deaths of the last two bhaalspawn (including the protag of bg1-2), and the rebirth of bhaal. And since that's just canon and doesn't tie into your choice at the end of bg2, there's no reason for it to not just be some other game set in forgotten realms.

This right here.
The Forgotten Realms is such a fantastic setting in its own right. I'd much rather see it get the exposure it deserves as the rich and historied world that it is. Build a good game(something this studio is quite capable of doing) and then set yourself up to sell the world itself rather than shamelessly pretending to be the next installment of a timeless masterpiece.
Apparently it’s all supposed to tie into the Bhaalspawn stuff a few acts into the game.

This is not an argument in the game's favor, quite the contrary in fact.
