They were being waved through into government property, unless the police were claiming they were under arrest, they had every right to walk away. I'm somebody who does have some RL experience going to protests so I know how to keep my head down, you never follow the heard and keep to the sides if you want to check things out.
Only go through the crowds if you're experienced and can get out of trouble fast when shit goes down. 'Interpreted as orders'? Piss poor excuse, know your rights. Mind you I was one of the few people who was begging inexperienced people not to go to that protest event because even before it happened my instinct was being set off big time.
Even so police officers can't force you to walk a certain way along a protest if you decide you're no longer a part of the group. My point is whatever they could charge you with for walking off away from them is nothing compared to what they've been going after January 6th protestors with who trespassed.

Rights can be violated, only power matters.
