There was an NES RPG that did something like this.
It was called Faria.
Just read the synopsis. Sounds interesting, but it seems to be about a man cursed by a wizard, turned into a woman, who turns back into a man after the curse is lifted when he defeats the wizard. It's not quite what the poster above was suggesting.
