I had a friend (have a friend, but I wrote this thing in past tense) whose name was different in a different way. But anyways, he took his generic sounding (and properly and easily spelled) middle name as his first name and applied for some jobs. AFAIK people accepted that he was the same person, and he got better responses with the generic middle name.
