I'm actually watching Babylon 5 right now (Roku TV). To me, it's basically a slightly worse DS9 (NOT AN INSULT) with really weird 3DCG. Mid Season 2 right now, as things are getting ready to ramp up to the Great War (I've seen a few things about it, but I suppose that'll be the climax of the series?).
Babylon 5 has more hard science fiction ship models for the earth faction, and the political intrigue is much more gritty, seedy and realistic, than the utopian/pacifistic DS9 counterpart.
But Babylon 5 was limited by a shoestring budget, ham-acting (and at time scripts) and poor CGI. It still did a good job rivaling DS9 and eclipsed it as well at several points in its run.
One thing I'm curious about- was Delenn's transformation a matter of prosthesis allergies (think Rev Bem in Andromeda), or was it intended to happen all along?
She was supposed to transform from a 'man' to a woman, but they wisely scratched those plans.
Man there's a series I could both rant and rave about. I took a break in the middle and came back later and it was like a completely different TV show.
Andromeda's last season was also shit. I liked awkward sun girl, but she was reaching Mary Sue territory. And the setting they were stuck in that whole season was awful.
I tried watching it but I couldn’t get through season one. I liked some of the characters but it just seemed too wooden and corny for me, like the worst parts of Star Trek ramped up. Maybe I’ll give it another shot.
Season one is the worst, but is required for the set-up. It actually gets better in season 2, 3 and 4. Five is another nosedive.
Keep in mind that B5 was originally pitched to Paramount and they turned it down, only to hold on to all the pitch materials and plagiarize them to make DS9.
The first two seasons are pretty rough by today's standards but the acting isn't any less hammy than TNG of the same era. Season 3 is where it really gets into the swing of things and 4 is amazing, not least because getting told the show had been canceled led to them pulling out all the stops to wrap up every major plot in one season.
Ironically actually speeding things up like that led to such a ratings comeback the show got surprise renewed at the last minute, which is why season 5 is noticeably much poorer than the rest. The one exception being the series finale itself.
