By that logic, the CIA coup never would have happened if we Americans had fought harder to have a less corrupt government. I get what you are saying, but this line of thinking ends up outsourcing blame for things the ruling class does onto the plebes.
I wouldn't say sat by. A lot of people resisted for a while. The problem was cutting through the lies, bullshit, and misdirection and over coming repression. That continues to this day.
I would. Know why? Because Joke Biden is still sitting in the white house fucking us over.
It's the basic principle of nationalism. The nation is the people. Among other things, one of the implications of this is that people get the government they deserve and will tolerate.
That bottom up view of society isn't correct. People get the government their ruling class wants. Your way of thinking pits plebe against plebe instead of plebe against ruling class. The former is not a threat to the system and is in fact encouraged by it.
Just look at kosher conservative media. It's how they frame things most of the time. They talk less about defeating the people financing the left than they do about demonizing rank-and-file (especially white) liberals. They rub their hands together when they get people talking about "muh white liberals" instead of "Jennifer" Pritzker.

I agree. The American people sat by and permitted a takeover.
