He's targeting a competitor. Feel free to remember that Trump supporters went from "Lyin' Ted" to "Lion Ted" as Ted Cruz improved his political position to lean more populist.

I agree. Unfortunately, basically everyone who's running for US president is doing it because as popular as the populist right is, it's not entirely tolerated within any institution.
