Its pretty weak, because generally it only works if you already know both what is being satirizing and agree with the writer's beliefs already. Which means most of the time, you already know the joke and probably could come up with it yourself if you didn't already.
It's not meant to be ha ha funny, it's just meant to elicit a chuckle while pointing out how retarded or absurd the other side is, which makes it useful for converting on the fence normies, at least when it comes to hot button issues. This article from The Bee is gold standard IMO:
