At least with older cultural trends words were used vaguely correctly; calling something "cool" still made more sense than calling something "fire" because the latter is either a noun or a verb, but not an adjective which the former can be.
Language is whatever conveys meaning. Hot is an adjective used to describe things that are not elevated in temperature. Fire is hot. The connection is simple.

As a neologism it's too long, ugly, and awkward. "Preening" has always worked pretty well.
