At least one is aware their lives are in danger, and choose to take that risk. You can call that retarded, but it's their choice. What I've heard about Lord Miles seems pretty funny, and if that's how he wants to live his life, well, that's on him.
He's mentioned his Christian belief several times, which is a very odd thing for a modern Englishman to do, so it's safe to say he's probably pretty serious about the idea that the lord is waiting for him other side.
If he truly believes that, why wouldn't he seek out danger? The faster you die, the less time you have to sin.
