It's not a "woke" law. Every place I've heard of does this because it is prejudicial to have a defendant shackled and in a jail outfit when he's on trial.
The real issue here is that the cops are supposed to be there to prevent this, and the ones there clearly weren't doing their jobs.
this is correct, but in multiple states, if the defendant does not make bail, they will still cuff the guy's ankle to a chair or a U bolt in the ground. the jury can't see it, but the defendant is not getting far.
I suspect the way this will go is trial by video. Keep in mind it's still prison-industrial complex, as woke as state lawmakers may feel. People in this process won't have any problem with it; it'll make their lives a lot easier.
