I swear I've seen some older games at Best Buy that included the steelbook for free. Like they had a bunch left over from pre-sales so they threw them on the shelf with the game to get rid of them.
That would have been a far less wasteful solution here.
The original picture source could hypothetically be anyone involved the process of sending them to a landfill, and I also guarantee that there are at least three semi-popular accounts on any given social media platform dedicated to digging through landfills to find shit. I'm not saying it's certain to be true, but I also wouldn't write it off out of hand.
BestBuy seems to just always have leftover collector's/steelbook editions of games well after their release. I think its because people don't think to go there as often for buying games, and they have the space to not need to purge as quickly.
