Thomas Sowell writes about that in one of his books. But you also had black elites in New England where slavery was abolished before the founding (WEB Dubois come from that line). My gg grandfather was the child of his slave owner and a slave. He got a few acres of land from his dad and was given to the legitimate daughter of his slave master so his half sister.
On another side of the family I had a gg grandfather who was white from a blue blood family but claimed to be black (otherwise I wouldn’t be here). I’ve been doing research into his past but it’s hard to find. I did find his father and ancestry but I imagine something must have happened to cause him to live amongst blacks in the late 1800s
After slavery. He was given to his half sister when she got married and when his father died (after slavery) he was given some land and raised his family there and worked for her and her husband (although I’m pretty certain she knew they were siblings).
This is why Booker T Washington said that learning a skill would be the best thing for most recently freed slaves and then with each generation there would be more success. He also said I know we aren’t equal but we can be and it will take time and hard work. He also talked about race grifters in his day. Sucks that he is seen in a bad light by modern day black academics

Yes, where do you think I got it?
He got land while still being a slave???

Ah, that sort of makes sense.
Reminds me of the comment by Mary Chestnut talking about similarly messed up dynamics: "Ours is a terrible system."
