The problem is that Canada has zero freedom of expression protections while simultaneously having added vague hate crime legislation to the federal Criminal Code allowing charges equivalent to felonies.
Canada and the rest of the Commonwealth countries are just a simulacrum of democracy. For all its faults, you can literally say anything you want to anyone in the US other than threaten violence, and government can't do anything about it.
Government censorship and criminalizing speech is one of the hallmarks of oppressive political regimes.
