He probably forgot again because Nuland was wondering out loud about the possibility of arming Ukraine with 5th-Gen fighters (like the F-22). Of course, that seems more like "big ask" negotiation so that when they get down to the F-16's they were already going to send, they can tell Russia "Look, we de-escalated!"
Right before the Ukrainian Air Force de-escalates a large chunk of the Russia Air Force. What I wouldnt give to see someone finally reach out and touch those MiG's that have been taking the long-range pot-shots from inside Russia.
It's mostly strategic bombers, often carrying old Soviet air-launched cruise missiles. Of which Ukraine once gave more than half thousand to Russia, after America paid Ukraine to do this (and to destroy all of Ukraine's own bombers).
They also dropped freefall bombs on Mariupol from the Tupolevs because there was no air defense there.
In this case, I am referring to the MiG-31's, that have been flying on the border with AWACS craft and taking extreme-long range missile shots at Ukrainian aircraft. They arent particularly accurate (since they are shooting missiles that were designed against bombers, not fighters), but they have been accurate enough that it is suppressing the Ukrainian Air Force and keeping them from flying as many missions as they need to. And nothing they are flying is able to mount the sort of long-range missiles needed to reach out and touch them back (like the American AMRAAM or the combined Euro Meteor)
