I think the DoE regulates nuclear energy? So they could be indirectly involved in weapons research. (anything to do with the handling of fissile material, not 100% sure)

Weaponization of nuclear energy is a far different thing than nuclear materials and having any part of the weaponization under the department of energy is a huge red flag
