Gaiman is one of those “career writers” who didn’t have enough good ideas to support his prolific lifetime output. Neverwhere is very good, American Gods is very good, Anansi Boys is decent, but most of the rest of his content is straight-up bad.
The original Sandman comics are mostly great with spots of tumbler-tier retardery. Some genuinely great stories bookended by proto-woke nonsense. The overarching narrative is very well done, and it really sticks the landing.
