They don't understand and they don't care. It's a frustration I've had with my own parents. No one from that generation seems to understand the gravity of the situation we find ourselves in. They're still buried in the dream of the 60s when housing was affordable, gender relations weren't irreparably damaged, and the country was still White. They seem to be literally incapable of understanding that Rome is burning and that they hand a major hand in it and that the solution is to abandon so many of their core principles because those are what allowed things to get this bad in the first place.
They're all just waiting to die before anything gets bad enough that it might force them to confront their failures.
