Well now that the glass ceiling has been revealed to be a myth, these companies no longer need to maintain a daycare of useless holes and other diversity hires to remain profitable. They can actually focus on the core employee requirements to keep their business afloat and shrink that with endless grinds.
I had read years ago that these playpens were in place to keep workers at the shop for many hours.
Shit . . . why not follow the Chinese and put some nets outside the building for the sad sacks who try to defenestrate themselves?
I think it goes beyond that, where it makes it so that most of who you spend time with are your co-workers, so now there's a strong linkage between your professional and social lives. Which has two negative side effects:
As for "why not put out suicide nets?" I think these perks are supposed to be the "suicide nets". The modern West's solution to the "depressing company town" problem seems to be to simply make the company town comfortable and pleasant.
They weren't really needed for all that time either. It was a sign of control.
