In Australia, a lot of this sort of stuff is being pushed by Mike Cannon-Brookes (of Atlassian, which you have probably heard of), who is, in short, the Bankman-Fried of Australia…
He is one of the largest political donors in the country, and actively buys shares in energy companies to run them into the ground…
Man destroyed AGL (gas, electricity provider) from the inside out, after buying out majority shares…
Now he is looking to buy up swathes of central Sydney, to turn it into his personal tech playground, including a “wooden skyscraper”…
YHA dormitories, formerly marketed to backpackers, as cheap accommodation, are now being sold as “co-living rooms”…
Cramped, shared with at least 3 others, some with no windows, and certainly no en-suite. And not even that cheap. Utterly dystopian. And yet that is what this non-profit wants to pivot towards…
At a complete guess... Having so much power over other businesses, and potential access to so much data... Perhaps tends to attract a certain type of individual. Perhaps...
I also think that perhaps it is the sort of "industry" where it is not so much getting to the top on your own merits, as it is who you know, and who you can influence, let's say...

“You will own nothing and you will be happy”.
Thanks, tech bros…
What is it with workplace/enterprise software companies and being evil? Salesforce is another really shady one.
