I read a really good article on total lifespan emissions on ICE cars vs electric. Electric vehicles emit more initially, and ICE cars don't catch up until they have hit something like 80k miles driven.
Hybrids are really where we should be going, as they have the best features of both worlds, with the ability to do short trips with the ICE engine off where the ICE is less efficient, and then an ICE for long trips to provide range.

Even without being worried about global warming, I think it's nice to move the smog out of cities. I don't want my town to be like Shanghai. That doesn't mean I think there should be any mandates or subsidies.
