I remember the Last Airbender creators being surprised that boys liked Katara just like they liked Aang and Sokka. There have been so many popular female characters with wide demographic appeal. How do people ignore them all?
Same way a racist reconciles the view of a good person of the race they hate, or a religious zealot of a decent person in another faith. "Men hate women, all men are mysogynysts" is a core tenant, a Commandment, a fundamental pillar of their ideology and worldview, and so even when it happens several billion times that men don't hate women, every single time, they'll be surprised, compartmentalize that example, and forget it as a singular example, no matter how often it hits.
