You know, thinking back on all the previous action movies with female leads that I know of, there's something I noticed about most of them. The women in those actually looked tough and like they could and would kill someone. They had defined muscle tones, they could wear a convincing scowl, and they'd often get scruffy and dirty from all their ordeals. Even if the movies were fantastical or the stunts pulled in them were impossible to do, they had me fully convinced that the women in them were hardened badasses.
Jennifer Lawrence, meanwhile, never looked like she aged past 14. She's always scrawny and petite, like she spends all her time in the salon and none in the gym. Her face is impossibly smooth and doesn't speak of having any worldly experience whatsoever. She spent most of her time as Mystique as...herself because putting on body paint and prosthetics was beneath her; she didn't even bother dying her hair black or wearing a wig for the part to match Raven's natural color in the original films.
It's honestly a common problem with a lot of actresses these days. They DEMAND to be regarded as these superbadasses, but they absolutely do not look the part, refuse to do anything to look the part, and when push comes to shove, show how weak they really are. Look no further than Guylandriel's actress, who kept on freaking out whenever she had to take on the big, tough male actors in all her action scenes.
Rebecca Romijn was just better in every way, I agree, yes…
Even if “First Class” is probably a better movie than “Last Stand”, Romijn was almost objectively the better, hotter actress in that role…
Side note: how the hell is “Romijn” even pronounced, lol? Rommy-jin? No wonder she took her husband’s name…
I'm torn on this one. My first instinct is to say "She what now?" But then also, Galadriel was never supposed to be an action girl. She's supposed to be restrained, understated and seen as powerful because of what she doesn't show (except when tempted by the One Ring, which is as much a statement of its corrupting influence as one of her power) rather than what she does. She's an example of the lost art of strength of will manifested in personality and demeanor. She shouldn't have had to "take on" anyone because Galadriel isn't a "tuff gurl" character.
Doesn't matter what Tolkien's Galadriel is supposed to be. Amazon made their Galadriel to be a big tough girlboss who shows all the MEN (and male Elves) what a bunch of enormous pussies they are...and this is all represented by a scrawny little actress who can't do any of her stunts without flinching.
