Back during the GamerGate days I think our actions drew blood from the monster of activist journalism. It lashed out really hard against GG because it was the first time in EVER that a consumer-led revolt did damage to any journalistic conglomerate/institution.
It's been all downhill from there - you know how angry the regime was when it STILL talks to this day bitching about GG.
Project Veritas has been cutting at the sides of that institution before Trump's election and Trump being elected legitimately made the institution scared. The institutions were acting like petulant children - they were acting like they should've WON the 2016 election. That's why it lashed out at Julian Assange because Julian was a key factor in helping Trump win with his leaks. It is also why the institutions were willing to lie, cheat, and steal to "win" 2020.
I agree, but they have only doubled down on the nonsense since then.
That's an explanation that flatters our ego. It's also possible that they just see GG as a useful boogeyman. They don't still talk about Nazis because they're "mad" about them 70 years after the fact, after all.
This should not be in any way surprising. Except for the fact that they usually win no matter which candidate wins, so they don't bother to lie and rig.
