If you keep giving to someone who only takes, they will forever take from you and give you nothing. That is how incentives work.

'Treat people well so they'll treat you well' sounds great and all but it assumes you're dealing with people who are capable of decency and good faith. Sometimes you have to acknowledge that you are not, and progress from carrot to stick.
