Oh for tomatoes it wasn't that as people did die but not for the reason they thought they did. The cutlery of nobility at the time was made of pewter, a combination of tin and lead. When eating the tomatos, the natural acidity of the tomatoes would react with this, bringing out the lead so people thought it was the tomatoes when it was actually lead poisoning.
