The two-party system we have causes people in the center to alternate between parties. That's why in the midterms (sans cheating) the opposing party gains seats, because only far extremists want full control by their party. The more share of the vote a party gets the more people want to reign them in. So it hovers around 1/2 and 1/2.
Adding moderate candidates doesn't shift anything toward your side it just dilutes your party. You don't start with 50% of the vote as Republican, add 10% moderates and get 60% of the vote. Instead you get 50% of the vote with 5/6ths Republican and 1/6th moderate.
If you want to win in the near term you make a big tent, but if you want to move the country ideologically you need to double down. Instead of celebrating Tulsi Gabbard demand that she get on board the train with 2A, merit, and all the other right ideas.
The system is fake and gay, regardless of the number of parties. Politicians are not chosen by the people to implement policy on behalf of the voters. Politicians are selected for their ability to get themselves elected, then use their office to manufacture the consent of the electorate for policies dictated to the elected officials by the party and their interest groups.
