At least in the south (don't know about Indiana) the style of slingshot with a wrist brace that he was using is referred to as a "wrist rocket" to distinguish it from the much less harmful slingshot. I've seen someone put a large hole in a five gallon drywall compound bucket with a wrist rocket so the distinction is important.
I'm sure you've seen the pop vs soda map. Southern Indiana is coke territory, along with the south. It's not unreasonable to think other southern slang is used there.
