Holding the plebs responsible for the actions of the elite has been the mindset of western liberals since at least WW1. That is what justified the treaty of Versailles, the firebombings of Dresden, the nuking of Japan, the obliteration of villages in Vietnam, every economic sanction such as those that lead to the starvation of Iraqi children. It has demonstrably never worked as intended, but it's an unassailable paradigm in liberal foreign policy.
They can't criticize their beloved fellow elites. Instead they attack the people whom they hated to begin with: the common man. Hell, a lot of their politics revolves around hating on ordinary people.
