Media representation versus reality. Had a buddy I worked in a kitchen with that was a legal economic migrant from Mexico. He rented a cheap room, drank cheap beer, ate all his meals at the restaurant and five years later moved back to Mexico and bought a house and his own restaurant. Still have a standing offer to go visit him.
It's a perfectly reasonable strategy, and it's what most people do with Big Cities as it is. Take the money, then go to a place with lower cost of living and reap the rewards.
Oh I had no problem with the guy and we still talk regularly about food. He used a process available to him to build up revenue and invest in his home country because it was cheaper to live back there. That’s no different than what I did with my military experience, and frankly it’s a better investment in the long run.
