Random historical factoids are kid of my thing, I admit, lol…
Not sure why I happen to know this one, whether it was HS Religion or History class, or because my parents were big on Glastonbury Abbey (dissolved during that process), and all that stuff…
Or perhaps because I was “raised Anglican”, lol.
But yeah, that’s… How the Anglican/Episcopalian/Church of England works, so now ya know!
May I ask you what the difference is between Anglican, Episcopalian, and Church of England? I always considered them very similar.
Episcopalian is a subset that I believe only exists in North America. We don’t actually use that term in Aus.
The other two are synonymous. Church of England is the more formal version. “Anglican”… Is a bit broader. Because you have “high Anglican” (Cathedrals. Declining congregations), and the more “evangelical Anglican” (closer to Pentecostal/Baptist. Growing congregations. My local church).
Beyond that it gets a bit wish-washy, but basically… Episcopalian is just a subset, I do believe…
And then amongst the Irish diaspora, it’s really just called “Protestant”, for the most part… Including here, I think.
Thank you very much.
No worries bud!
I wish I knew more about this, actually…
There’s currently a schism in the Australian church between the “High Anglican” (Catholic in all but name/Church leadership) cathedrals, that don’t want to conduct gay marriage, have female priests, etc, and the “Low Anglican” local churches (in inner cities and suburbs, mostly) that control the diocese, and want to be as “progressive” as possible to attract the young’uns (so they say)…
As a result, you have the church administration forcibly closing a bunch of local churches with falling attendances (complicated, both sides to blame), and then the cathedrals and their allies threatening to split off and form a more conservative “diocese of the Southern Cross”, in competition, taking the real estate with them…
Look up St Andrews in Sydney vs the Gosford Anglican Church (militant leftist activist branch, known for its signs), for the clearest examples of the above, if you so wish!
