It doesn't help that neighborhoods only go one direction these days: denser and worse. That's what happens when you have a continuously increasing population (and a continually darkening one)
So yes people oppose apartment complexes and public transit, but they also oppose development that will house people that are richer than them. Hell is other people. The solution is that people shouldn't have any say what happens on someone else's property. If you want control buy enough property to keep people out at your preferred distance.
